சமூகப்பணியிலும், மனித சேவைத் தொடர்பான பிற தொழில்கள் அனைத்திலும் வாடிக்கையாளர் தன்னைப் பற்றி பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளும் தகவல்களை அவரைப் புரிந்துகொண்டு பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்கமட்டும் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டுமென்பது தொழில்நெறி. வாடிக்கையாளர் பற்றிய எந்தெந்தத் தகவல்களை எழுத்து வடிவாக்கலாம், எந்தெந்தத் தகவல்களை கணினியில் உள்ளீடு செயலாம், எந்தெந்தத் தகவல்களை பிறருடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளலாம் என்பதற்கு சமூகப்பணியில் தொழில்சார்ந்த நெறிமுறைகள் உள்ளன. முழுமையான மறைவடக்கப்பண்பை விட, அவ்வப்போது சந்தர்ப்பத்திற்கு ஏற்றவாறு பின்பற்றப்படும் மறைவடக்கப்பண்பு நெறிசார்ந்ததாகவும், பயனுள்ளதாகவும் இருக்குமென்று சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் கருதுகின்றனர்.

A position held by some social workers and other professionals that no information about a client shall be disclosed to others, regardless of circumstances. The social worker who practices this position would not put the information obtained from a client into any written form—for example, a case record or a computer file—or discuss it with colleagues or supervisors. Most social workers believe that absolute confidentiality is impractical and that relative confidentiality is ethical and more productive.
