American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). A labor organization founded in 1936, with headquarters in Washington, DC, and chapters throughout the nation, whose members are employed by nonfederal governments. Many of its members include state and county public assistance workers, child welfare workers, and other social services personnel. Other membership groups include police personnel, firefighters, and public agency administrators.
