சமூக செயற்பாடுகள் பாதிக்குமளவு ஏற்படும் மதுப்பழக்கம். கடந்த ஒரு வருடத்தில் தினந்தோறும் மது அருந்துவது, மதுப் பழக்கத்தை நிறுத்தத் தொடர்ந்து முயற்சி செய்யாமல் இருப்பது, மதுப் பழக்கத்தால் ஏற்படும் உடல்ரீதியான கோளாறுகள், வேலையில் கவனமின்மை, வன்முறைப் பிரயோகம், பிறருடனான உறவுகள் சீர்கேடடைவது போன்ற அறிகுறிகள் மிதமிஞ்சிய மதுப் பழக்கத்தினால் ஏற்படும் அறிகுறிகளாகும். இந்த அறிகுறிகள் எல்லாமும் மதுப்பழக்கமுடையவருக்கு இருக்காதாகையால், தான் குடிகாரனல்ல என்று மதுவுக்கு அடிமையானவர்கள் நியாயப்படுத்திக் கொள்வர்.

A pattern of alcohol use that results in impaired social functioning. The behavior pattern typically includes a daily need or wish for alcohol, inconsistent attempts to control drinking, physical disorders aggravated by use of alcohol, occasional binges, absences or ineffectiveness at work, violence, and social relationship problems. Because it is rare for people with alcohol dependency to have all these symptoms, they sometimes rationalize that they do not suffer from alcoholism.
