நீதிமன்றத்தின் மூலம் பிரிந்துவிட்ட தம்பதியினருள் ஒருவர் பிறருக்குக் கொடுக்கவேண்டிய வாழ்க்கைப்படி. இது பெரும்பாலும் கணவர்களால் முன்னாள் மனைவிகளுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும் தொகை என்றாலும், சில வழக்குகளின் தன்மையைப் பொறுத்து மனைவியர்கள் தங்கள் முன்னாள் கணவர்களுக்கும் கொடுக்க வேண்டிவரும். இது குழந்தைகளின் பராமரிப்பிற்காகக் கொடுக்கப்படும் உதவித்தொகையிலிருந்து வேறுபட்டது.

Alimony payments are most commonly made by husbands to their former wives, although increasingly, wives are required to make such payments to their former husbands.
