மூளையின் புறப்பகுதிகளைத் தூண்டி தற்காலிக விழிப்பு நிலையையும், பரவசநிலையையும், நன்னிலை உணர்வையும் தூண்டும் ஒரு மருந்துப்பொருள். சோர்வைப் போக்கவும், குழந்தைகளிடம் உள்ள படபடப்புத் தன்மையை மாற்றவும், உடல் எடையைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தவும் மருத்துவர்களால் பரிந்துரைக்கப்படுகின்றது. மனவெழுச்சித் தூண்டிகள் என்றும், துருதிகள் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படும் இந்த மருந்தை நீண்ட நாள் பயன்படுத்தும்போது, அந்த மருந்தை உடல் படிப்படியாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, இயல்பான மனவெழுச்சிக்குக் கூட அதிக அளவு மருந்து தேவைப்படும் நிலையை உருவாக்கும். இதனால் மிகு சோர்வும், மாரடைப்பும், மனச்சிதைவு நோயும் உண்டாகும். மரணம் கூட ஏற்படலாம்.

A drug that stimulates the cerebral cortex, tends to temporarily increase one's mental alertness, produces a sense of euphoria and well-being, and reduces fatigue; sometimes used clinically by physicians in treating children's hyperkinesis and used in weight control. Commonly known as “bennies,” “uppers,” and “speed,” amphetamines are addictive and usually require increasingly large doses as tolerance develops. Addiction can and frequently does result in psychosis or death from overexhaustion or cardiac arrest.
