சமூக ஒழுங்கின்மையால் மக்கள் தார்மீகப் பண்புகளை இழத்தல். சமூக உறவுகள் சிதைந்து, சமூக அடையாளங்கள் அர்த்தமற்றதாகி, சுயக்கட்டுப்பாடுகள் மீதான நம்பிக்கை தளர்தல். சமூக அளவில் ஒழுங்கின்மை, அமைதிக்கேடு உருவாகும். இந்த வார்த்தை பிரான்ஸ் நாட்டு சமூகவியலார் எமில் டர்க்காம் என்பவரால் உபயோகப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. இந்த நிலையில் சமூகத்தில் தட்டளிவும் (derangement), தனிமனிதர்களிடத்தில் மனநிறைவு உண்டாக்கமுடியாத, தணியாத, பேராசையுடைய இச்சைகள் (an insatiable will) தென்படுமென்று எமில் டர்க்காம் கூறினார்.

Anomie frequently occurs in rapidly changing societies and communities or groups subject to catastrophic stress. In such circumstances, individuals often become alienated, apathetic, and devoid of previously valued goals.
