apartheid

A term in the Afrikaans language meaning “separate development” that refers to the policy of racial separation once maintained by the white-controlled South African government. The policy ended with South Africa's 1994 national elections giving people of all races the right to vote. However, apartheid has left an institutional legacy of differential education, sanitation, health services, infant and maternal mortality, housing, employment, and land distribution that may take generations to overcome.
