One of the pervasive developmental disorders characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction and the development of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, causing impairment in most areas of functioning. Similar to autistic disorder but with a later onset, the individual with the disorder usually has difficulties in social interactions throughout life.
