இரண்டாம் உலகப்போர் முடிந்த அடுத்த இரண்டு தசாப்தங்களில் (1946-1964), இயல்பான பிறப்பு விகிதத்தைவிட அதிக அளவு குழந்தைகள் பிறந்த, மழலைகள் பெருகிய (baby boom generation), தொட்டில்கள் நிறைந்த காலகட்டம். இது தலைமுறைகளுக்கு இடையேயான குணாசமங்களைக் குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகவும் பயன்படுகின்றது. இந்தத் தலைமுறையினர் அதிக வசதிகள் இல்லாது வளர்ந்தாலும், போரினால் சீர்குலைந்த பொருளாதாரத்தைச் சீரமைக்கவும், இவர்களுக்கு முந்தைய தலைமுறையினரின் சமூக நலத் திட்டச் செலவினங்களையும் தாங்க வேண்டியவர்களானார்கள். இத்தலைமுறையினர் போரினால் ஸ்தம்பித்து நின்ற உள்நாட்டுக் கட்டமைப்பையும், சர்வதேசப் பொருளாதாரப் போட்டியையும் சமாளித்து வளர்ந்தவர்கள். இந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் பிறந்தவர்கள் 2010 - 2020 வாக்கில் முதுமை எய்தி ஓய்வுபெறும்போது, முதியோர் நலத்திட்டங்களில் அரசு அதிகமாக செலவுவிட வேண்டி வரும்.

The men and women in the United States who were born in the two decades immediately following World War II. Demographers indicate that many more than the usual number of births occurred during these years because many people had postponed having children during the war. This“bulge”in the population necessitates many adjustments in social and economic planning as the baby boomers move through the life cycle. When this group reaches retirement age in the years 2010 to 2020, it is anticipated that the social security system will be severely strained. See also Generation X.
