தத்தெடுப்புகளில் பலவகையுண்டு. 1.மானியத் தத்தெடுப்பு (subsidized adoption) 2.சுயாதீனத் தத்தெடுப்பு (independent adoption), 3. நிறுவனம் சாராத தத்தெடுப்பு (gray-market adoption), சட்டபூர்வமற்ற தத்தெடுப்பு (black-market adoption), பிறநாட்டுக் குழந்தைகளைத் தத்தெடுத்தல் (inter-country adoption). சட்டபூர்வமற்ற தத்தெடுப்பு என்பது, ஒரு குழந்தையின் சட்டபூர்வமான பாதுகாவலரிடம் நேரடியாகப் பணத்தைக் கொடுத்து எந்த விதிமுறைகளையும் பின்பற்றாது குழந்தையைத் தத்துப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வது.

The adoption of children by couples or individuals who are unable to adopt through legitimate public or private adoption agencies. Typically, the party who wants a child contracts with an intermediary to obtain a child and makes monetary payments to the intermediary and indirectly to the child's legal guardian.
