A descriptive term applied to a premorbid condition or any phenomenon located between two categories. Social workers and mental health workers often use the term informally in describing individuals who are at or near the dividing line between psychosis and nonpsychosis or normalcy and mental illness; not to be confused with borderline personality disorder.
