(1826–1890) Founder of the Children’s Aid Society in 1853, the private organization that provided shelter, education, and family placing out for homeless and destitute children, more than 50,000 of whom were sent on orphan trains to be adopted by Western farmers. His studies of the conditions of poor people in New York were widely reported and gained public awareness. His work greatly influenced modern child welfare programs and the foster care system.
