character disorder

A maladaptive personality pattern involving inflexibility in thinking, perceiving, and reacting; also known as “character neurosis.” Individuals with this dysfunction are often obsessively meticulous, pedantic, and cruel in an intellectual way. Psychoanalytically oriented professionals also describe certain specific maladaptive character traits such as the oral character, anal character, and genital character.
