The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (P. L. 99-272) passed in 1985 which, among other things, requires all hospitals participating in Medicare in the United States to provide appropriate medical screening examinations and treatment to all individuals in their care who have medical conditions, regardless of their economic status or insurance benefits.
