A procedure social workers in direct practice and research use to measure client behavior and behavioral changes by having others observe and record the client's actions. Typically, the social worker has the client's spouse or other family members, friend, co-worker, or teacher do this monitoring using checklists, diaries, and logs in which the frequency of some behavior is counted. Collateral monitoring is usually used in conjunction with client self-monitoring, and it may be done overtly or unobtrusively, but it should be done only with the client's informed consent.
