ஒரு குற்றத்திற்காக நீதிமன்றத்தால் தண்டிக்கப்படும் குற்றவாளி, சிறைத்தண்டனைக்கு மாற்றாக, அதற்கு இணையான காலம் சமுதாய சேவை செய்ய நீதிமன்றம் வழங்கும் தீர்ப்பு. இம்மாதிரியான தீர்ப்பைப் பெற்றவர்கள், வீடற்றவர்களுக்கான முகாம்களில் உணவு பரிமாறுதல், பெற்றோர்களற்ற குழந்தைகளைச் சுற்றுலா அழைத்துச் செல்லல், போதைப் பழக்கத்திற்கு எதிராகப் பள்ளிகளில் பிரச்சாரம், மருத்துவமனைகளில் நோயாளிகளுக்கு உதவி என்று பல சேவைகள் செய்ய உத்தரவிடப்படுவார்கள்.

A punishment ordered by a court that requires some specified work to improve a relevant community by an individual convicted of a crime. The convict is obliged to perform the service for a specified amount of time in lieu of incarceration for an equal amount of time. The work required includes such activities as serving food in homeless shelters, taking parentless children on outings, giving antidrug talks at schools, and doing volunteer work in hospitals.
