The type of direct social services in which clients are provided with tangible resources needed to resolve specific problems or attain a normative standard of well-being, such as food, housing, transportation, clothing, or access thereto. These social services are compared with those in which the social worker provides important but intangible services, such as reassurance, knowledge, psychotherapy, and relationship-building skills.
