ஒரு சமூகப்பணியாளரும், அவரிடம் உதவி கேட்டு வரும் வாடிக்கையாளரும் ஆரம்பத்திலே அவர்கள் என்ன நோக்கத்திற்காக இணைந்து பணியாற்ற உள்ளார்கள், அந்த நோக்கத்தை எப்படி அடையவிருக்கின்றார்கள், அதற்கான கால அவகாசமென்ன, அதைச் சார்ந்த மற்ற நடைமுறைகள் என்ன என்பதுபற்றி வாய்மொழியாகவோ, எழுத்துபூர்வமாகவோ அல்லது புரிதலாகவோ வெளிப்படுத்தி செயலை தொடங்குவது. சமூகப்பணி ஒப்பந்தங்கள் இருக்கமானவை அல்ல. சேவை வழங்கப்படும் காலத்தில் பரிசீலனைக்கு உட்படுத்தப்பட்டு தேவைப்படின் மாற்றங்கள் செய்து கொள்ளும்படியான தன்மை கொண்டவை.

An orientation in social work practice in which the social worker and client identify goals at the beginning of the relationship and formally establish a working agreement about how to reach them. The agreement includes a specification of terms, the timetables, and other procedures. The contract may be written or oral, and unlike a legal contract, may easily be renegotiated during the course of the intervention process. See also covenant model.
