copayment

A provision in some insurance programs that requires the policyholder to share the cost of any loss or claim. In many health insurance programs, the beneficiary is required to pay a percentage of the provider's bill before reimbursement is made for the rest. The major purpose of this arrangement is to discourage inappropriate use of resources and to encourage responsible participation. See also third party and third-party payment.
