ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காலத்தில் (வருடத்தில்) ஆயிரம் அல்லது இலட்சம் மக்கள் தொகையில் எத்தனை மனிதர்கள் மரிக்கின்றார்கள் என்பதைக் கணக்கிடும் முறை. இந்தியாவில் பிறப்பு விகிதமும் 24.28 (2001),.....20.97(2011) இறப்பு விகிதமும் 8.74 (2001) ....7.48 (2011) படிப்படியாகக் குறைந்து வருகிறது.
