The federal agency formed in 1979 when the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) was divided into two federal- level agencies. The principal components of the department now include the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) (including Medicare and Medicaid), and the U.S. Public Health Service, under which falls the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
