Devine, Edward T.

(1867–1948) As a contributor to social work education, he helped found the New York School of Philanthropy in 1898 and guided it toward its development as the Columbia University School of Social Work. He also founded the leading social work journal of the time, The Survey, and wrote several texts about the history of social work and social welfare, including Misery and its Causes (1909), Social Work (1928), and When Social Work Was Young (1939).
