direct treatment

A group of intervention procedures used in social casework or clinical social work in which the social worker seeks to implement specific changes or improvement through personal contact with the client. The term was first used by Mary Richmond (1861–1928) to designate a social worker's face-to-face interactions with individual clients, as distinguished from indirect treatment or problem solving and from developmental work in the environment.
