சமூகப்பணிக் கல்வியில் முனைவர் பட்டமே அதன் இறுதி நிலையாகும். இந்த இறுதி நிலைத் தகுதிக்கான சான்றளிப்பு PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) என்றும், DSW (Doctor of Social Work) என்றும் இருவேறு விதங்களில் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. இதற்கான கல்வியும் பயிற்சியும் மாணவர்களிடையே ஆய்வுத் திறனை அதிகரிப்பதையும், சமூகப்பணியின் அறிவுத்தளத்தை விசாலப்படுத்தி, தொழில் முறையைச் செழுமையாக்குவதையும் குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது. DSW மற்றும் PhD பட்டங்கள் சமமான தகுதி மற்றும் திறன்களை அடைவதை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டிருந்தாலும், சில நேரங்களில் DSW பட்டம் தொழில் திறன் சார்ந்ததாகவும், PhD பட்டம் அறிவுத் திறன் சார்ந்ததாகவும் தவறாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ளப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது. இந்த இரு பட்டங்களுக்கிடையே அறியப்பட்டிருக்கும் வேறுபாடு, அந்தப் பட்டங்களின் உள்ளடக்கத்தில் உள்ள வேறுபாடுகளை விட, அந்தப் பட்டங்களில் மாணவர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சியளிக்கும் கல்வி நிலையங்கள் இந்த இரண்டில் எதற்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கின்றன என்பதைப் பொறுத்தே அமைகிறது.

In social work education, the professional and academic training that culminates in the PhD or DSW degree. Doctoral education in social work has tended to emphasize development of the student's research and knowledge-building skills and advanced practice competence. The DSW and PhD degrees are equivalent and have virtually the same requirements. It was sometimes erroneously believed that DSWs would be for those seeking increased professional practice competence and PhDs for those more involved in research and building of theory or the knowledge base. However, the differences are more related to the preferences of the particular degree-granting institution than to different requirements.
