ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட போதைப் பொருளுக்காக ஏங்கும் நோயியல் நிலை. இந்த ஏக்கம் பெரும்பாலும் உடலியக்கம் சார்ந்ததாக இல்லாமல் மனச் சார்புடையதாக இருக்கும். அந்தப் பொருள் உபயோகத்திற்காகக் கிடைக்காதபோது மனவுளைச்சலும் மருட்சியும் அடைவர்.

The pathological craving for or abuse of chemical substances that results in psychological rather than physical dependence. The abuser who is habituated experiences psychological discomfort that may or may not be as severe as in withdrawal symptoms.
