The amount of money one receives from work in the form of wages and salaries. All other sources of income—from interest, gains on capital investments, rent, dividends, inherited money—are unearned income. Social Security revenues come from earned income collected from employees, their employers, and people who are self-employed. However, the amount of earned income received by retired persons reduces their Social Security benefits, whereas their unearned income does not.
