இயல்பாகப் பேசக்கூடிய மனிதரோ அல்லது குழந்தையோ மனப் பதட்டத்தினாலோ, கூச்சத்தாலோ பேசவேண்டிய இடங்களில் பேசாமலிருக்கும் நிலை. பள்ளிக் குழந்தைகள் இந்த மாதிரி பேசாமலிருப்பது, ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு வெறுப்பும் சலிப்பும் ஏற்படுத்தி, அவர்களுக்கு தண்டனை கொடுக்குமளவிற்கும், சக மாணவர்கள் கேலி செய்யுமளவிற்கும் பின் விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்திவிடும்.

The refusal to talk in almost all social situations even though the ability to speak and comprehend language exists and there is no organic or physical cause for the refusal. This condition is most commonly found in younger children during the time they are compelled to participate in social situations such as school.
