embezzlement

The crime of willfully appropriating money or property that is in one's control but belongs to another. The embezzler has possession of the property by virtue of a business relationship or through some office, employment, or position of trust with the owner. For example, if the treasurer of a social agency uses funds that were donated to the agency to pay personal expenses, that individual is guilty of embezzlement.
