சமூகப்பணியாளரிடம் வரும் வாடிக்கையாளர் சூழ்நிலையாலோ அல்லது தற்காலிகமாகவோ அனுபவித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் மன அழுத்தத்தைச் சமாளிக்கும் திறனை சமூகப்பணியாளர் முதலில் உருவாக்கவேண்டும். அதை வாடிக்கையாளரின் உணர்வுகளை அங்கீகரித்து கையாள்வதன் மூலமும், அவருடைய தன்னாற்றலை அடையாளம் கண்டு ஊக்குவிப்பதன் மூலமும், அவருடைய பிரச்சனையைப் பல்வேறுகூறுகளாகப் பிரித்து ஒவ்வொன்றையும் எப்படித் தீர்க்கலாம் என்று எடுத்துரைத்து, அவநம்பிக்கையை அகற்றி, பிரச்சனையைத் தீர்க்க முடியும் என்று நம்பிக்கை ஊட்டுவதன் மூலமும், வாடிக்கையாளர் தனது குறிக்கோளை எப்படி, எந்த முறையில் அடைவது என்று ஆவலைத் தூண்டியும் சாத்தியமாக்க வேண்டும். சாத்தியமாக்குபவர் பணியைப் போல, காரியங்களை இலகுபாக்குபவர், கற்றுக்கொடுப்பவர், பல்வேறு உதவிகளை ஒருங்கிணைப்பவர் என்று சமூகப் பணியாளர் பல்வேறுவிதமான கடமைகளைச் செய்யவேண்டும்.

In social work, the responsibility to help the client become capable of coping with situational or transitional stress. Specific skills used in achieving this objective include conveying hope, reducing resistance and ambivalence, recognizing and managing feelings, identifying and supporting personal strengths and social assets, breaking down problems into parts that can be solved more readily, and maintaining a focus on goals and the means of achieving them. Other primary social work roles are identified as the facilitator role, the educator role, and the mobilizer role.
