A family therapy concept pertaining to a set of beliefs, based on distortions of facts or history, shared by members of a family. These beliefs serve to enforce the family rules that influence the way the members interact and ensure cohesiveness and stability in the family. (For example, one family might believe and communicate the view that its male members are less assertive than its female members.) The family members may be aware that these ideologies are inaccurate, but they are allowed to go unchallenged to preserve the existing family structure.
