family rules

A family therapy term that refers to repetitious patterns of behavior and mutual expectations regulating that behavior in a family. One family, for example, might maintain a mutual expectation that none of its members is to express outwardly any feelings of affection for one another. Another family might have a rule that every dispute is to result in threatened or actual physical violence.
