Systematic procedures and criteria used by social workers and other professionals, especially in health care and institutional settings, to determine the capacity of clients to provide for their own care and well-being. The client is evaluated as to his or her ability to carry out needed activities of daily living (ADL) and possession of the tools needed to fulfill those activities.
