ஒரு சமூகத்தின் பல்வேறு உட்கூறுகள், தனிநபர்கள், குடும்பங்கள், குழுக்கள், நிறுவனங்கள், சிறு சமூகங்கள் செயல்பட ஒன்றுக்கொன்று எவ்வாறு தொடர்பு கொள்கின்றன, அவைகள் ஒத்திசைந்து செயல்படவும், சமநிலை காக்கவும் என்ன மாதிரியான கட்டுப்பாடுகளை வகுத்துக் கொள்கின்றன என்பதை விளக்கிச் சொல்வதே அமைப்புக் கோட்பாடு ஆகும். பல்வேறு உட்கூறுகளின் செயல்பாடு, செயல்பாட்டு எல்லைகள், அவற்றுக்கிடையேயான உறவுகள், தகவல் தொடர்பு பரிமாற்றங்கள் மீது அமைப்பியல் கோட்பாடு கவனம் செலுத்தும். உயிரினங்களின் செயல்பாட்டை விளக்க முற்பட்ட அமைப்புக் கோட்பாடே, சமூகத்தின் செயல்பாடுகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள, பொது அமைப்புக் கோட்பாடு என்று விரிவடைந்தது.

A conceptual orientation that attempts to explain holistically the behavior of people and societies by identifying the interacting components of the system and the controls that keep these components (subsystems) stable and in a state of equilibrium. It is concerned with the boundaries, roles, relationships, and flow of information between people. General systems theory is a subset of systems theories that focuses on living entities, from microorganisms to societies. See also ecological perspective and life model.
