கண்டறியப்பட்ட அல்லது சாத்தியக்கூறுள்ள மரபியல் பிரச்சனைகள் (பரம்பரையாக வரும் நோய்கள்) இருப்பதாக, யாரொருவருக்கு, குறிப்பாகக் குழந்தை பெற்றுக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் தம்பதியருக்குத் தெரிய வருகின்றதோ, அது அவர்களின் சந்ததியினரை எவ்வளவு பாதிக்கும் அல்லது பாதிக்காது என்று எடுத்துரைக்கும் ஆலோசனை.
டவுன் நோய்க்குறி (Down's syndrome), நீர்மத் திசுவழற்சி (cystic fibrosis), நீரிழிவு, அரிவாளணு இரத்தசோகை (sickle-cell anemia), இரத்த ஒழுக்கு (hemophilia), மற்றும் ஹண்டிங்டன் நோய் (Huntington's disease) ஆகியவை மரபியல் ரீதியாக வரும் என்று பொதுவாக அடையாளப்படுத்தப்பட்ட நோய்களில் அடங்கும்.

Counseling includes prevention of new problems by advising individuals about their reproductive risks and alternatives.
