கண்ணாடிக் கூரை என்பது ஒரு உருவகம். வளங்களையும், உரிமைகளையும் ஆண் பெண் என்ற பாகுபாடின்றி அணுக அனுபவிக்க உரிமையிருந்தாலும், பலநாடுகளிலும் கலாச்சாரங்களிலும் இச் சூழல் அனைவருக்கும் சாதகமாக அமைவதில்லை. குறிப்பாகப் பெண்கள், மதம், இனம் மற்றும் மொழிச் சிறுபான்மையானர் மீது பாரபட்சம் காட்டப்படுகின்றது. திறமை இருந்தாலும் உயர் பதவிகள் மறுக்கப்படுகின்றன. இந்த பாரபட்சம் வெளிப்படையான தேசியக் கொள்கையாகவோ, மறைமுகமாக பின்பற்றப்படும் மேலெல்லை வரம்பாகவோ (கண்ணாடிக்கூரை - Glass Ceiling) இருக்கலாம்.
