A term formerly used to describe activities to help disadvantaged people through philanthropy, charity, volunteerism, and personal examples of moral behavior. These activities were viewed by religious and political leaders and social philosophers as moral obligations to God and society, a view that motivated many of the social welfare activities that preceded government-funded welfare programs.
