green card

The name commonly used for the registration card issued by the U.S. government that identifies the holder as a permanent U.S. resident who is a citizen of another nation. The card (no longer green), which is issued by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), is officially U.S. Government Form 1-551, “Alien Registration Recipient.”
