A term applied, somewhat derisively, to social workers and other helping professionals and volunteers in Great Britain and some other English-speaking nations. The term was originally applied to welfare investigators who supposedly made unexpected visits to the homes of welfare recipients, but were usually identified by their neighbors in advance because of their predictable attire. The most similar term in the United States has been “lady bountiful.”
