habituation

1. A type of adaptation in which an individual has learned to eliminate responses to repeated and distracting stimuli. For example, an abused child might appear to become indifferent to continued physical punishment. 2. Some social workers and other professionals also use the term to refer to a form of drug dependence in which the individual has more of a psychological craving than a physical addiction (manifested by withdrawal symptoms).
