head injury

A trauma that temporarily or permanently damages tissue in or near the cranium, possibly resulting in brain or nerve damage. Internal head injury may affect some cognitive or motor functions or result in some functional impairment, even though there may be no overt symptom of damage. Many victims of even severe head injuries can be treated by physicians and health care and social services personnel and can achieve virtually full return to healthy functioning.
