சாம்பிராதயமான ஆய்வு முறைகளைக் கையாண்டு, முறையான தகவல் சேகரித்து, அதன் மூலம் கடந்த கால நிகழ்வுகளை, வரலாற்றை அறிந்துகொள்ள செய்யப்படும் ஆய்வு. கடந்த காலம் பற்றிய தகவல்களைப் போதுமான அளவு சேகரிக்க இயலாதாகையால், பல நேரங்களில், தகவல் இடைவெளிகளை ஒருதலைச் சார்பான ஊகங்களின் அடிப்படையில் தான் விளக்க முடியுமென்ற அபாயம் இந்த மாதிரியான ஆய்வுகளில் தவிர்க்க இயலாமல் போய்விடும்.

The systematic collection and evaluation of data about past events. It follows the procedures of all research (defining the problem to be studied, posing hypotheses, collecting data in a systematic way, analyzing the information obtained, and interpreting it within the limits of generalizability). Because the data that survive are so limited and the studied phenomena are not replicable, the potential for bias is great.
