ஒரு இல்லத்தரசி தன் குடும்பத்திற்காகச் செய்யும் பணிகளான உணவு தயாரித்தல், துணி துவைத்தல், வீட்டைச் சுத்தமாக வைத்திருத்தல், வெளியில் அழைத்துச் செல்லல், நோயாளிகளைப் பராமரித்தல் போன்ற அன்றாடப் பணிகளைக் கட்டணம் பெற்றுக்கொண்டோ, கட்டணம் பெறாமலோ செய்து தரும் பணியாளர்கள் அல்லது தன்னார்வத் தொண்டர்கள். குடும்பத்திலுள்ள உறுப்பினர்களுக்கு வீட்டைப் பராமரிக்கப் பயிற்சி தருவதற்காக அமர்த்தப்படுபவர்களும் இந்த வகையில் அடங்குவர். வதிவுத் தாதிமைப் பராமரிப்பு (nursing home residential care) என்ற முறையில் நோயாளிகளை மருத்துவ மனைகளில் வைத்துப் பாராமரிக்கும் செலவினங்களைக் குறைக்கவும் இல்லத்தரசி சேவைகளப் பயன்படுத்துவதுமுண்டு.

A health or social services program to help clients remain in their own homes. Usually, one or more helpers visit the clients'homes on predetermined schedules to prepare meals, do laundry, clean house, and provide transportation and some nursing care. These homemakers are usually public employees or volunteers, and their services often help keep clients out of more-expensive hospitals or nursing homes. In many communities, the homemaker service program is oriented primarily to educating and training family members to do this work, and those in chore service do the work.
