In psychodynamic theory, the presence of erotic impulses outside the individual's conscious awareness toward one or more members of the same sex. The individual might give behavioral clues about this orientation but does not engage in overt homosexual activity. Some theorists suggest that latent homosexuality, accompanied by efforts by the individual to conceal the orientation from oneself and others, can result in homophobia. See also latent homosexual.
