சிகிச்சை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் போது அந்த சிகிச்சையால் ஏற்படும் உடல் மன பாதிப்புகள் / பக்க விளைவுகள். இந்த பாதிப்பு சிகிச்சை அளிப்பவராலோ (physician) அல்லது கையாண்ட சிகிச்சை முறையாலோ (medication) ஏற்படலாம். முதலில் மருத்துவத் துறை சம்பந்தப்பட்ட வார்த்தையாகப் பொருள் கொள்ளப்பட்டது விரிவாகி, மனிதர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் எல்லாப் பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் பொருத்தி, அந்தப் பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்க உதவும் சேவைத் தொழிலினரின் (helping professionals), உதாரணமாக, சமூகப்பணியாளரின் அணுகு முறையால் ஏற்படும் பக்க விளைவுகளைக் குறிக்கவும் பயன்படுகிறது. உதாரணமாக வாடிக்கையாளர் ஒருவர் சமூகப்பணியாளர் ஆலோசனையின்றிச் செயல்படமுடியாத சார்ந்திருத்தல் நிலையை (extreme dependency) சமூகப்பணியாளர் கொடுத்த சிகிச்சையின் பக்கவிளைவாக அல்லது பாதிப்பாகக் கொள்ளலாம்.

A physical or mental disorder originating in the treatment or intervention process. Technically, the term refers to the action of a physician or to medication that results in the patient's developing a new disease. However, the term has been broadened and now also includes the illnesses that individuals or groups develop as a result of intervention by helping professionals, including social workers. For example, some clients develop extreme dependency on their social workers and may become afraid to act independently, a syndrome that may be iatrogenic.
