According to the psychosocial development theory of Erik Erikson (1902-1994), the fifth stage of human development occurs at about ages 12 to 18. The conflict facing adolescents is to establish clear ideas about their values, vocational objectives, and role in life, or there may be a lack of clarity about how to fit into the social environment. This is the period in which there is greatest likelihood of an identity crisis.
