The unethical practice of influencing a client to "remember" events in the past that did not actually happen and to convince the client that the memory represents actual experience. This practice is sometimes associated with clients who eventually claim to have recovered suppressed memories of such traumatic events as incest, rape, and child abuse. See also recovered memory.
