தன்னுடைய நலத்தின் / சுகத்தின் பொருட்டோ, பிழைப்பின் பொருட்டோ, பராமரிப்பின் பொருட்டோ பிறரைச் சார்ந்திராமல், சுயாதீனமாக / சுதந்திரமாக வாழும் திறன். சுயாதீன / சுதந்திர வாழ்க்கைத் திறன் என்பது ஒருவர் அடுத்தவரைச் சார்ந்திராமல், தன்னுடைய வரவு செலவுகளைச் (நிதி மேலான்மை) சமாளித்து, அன்றாட வாழ்க்கைச் செயல்களைத் தானே செய்து கொள்ள முடிந்த நிலையாகும். தற்சார்புடன் வாழ விரும்பும் ஒருவரது வீட்டில், அந்த வீட்டின் அனைத்து பகுதிகளுக்கும் சென்றுவர ஏதுவான வடிவமைப்பும், சமூக மற்றும் மருத்துவ சேவைகளை வழங்குவதற்கும் திட்டமிடப்படவேண்டும்.

The capability of an individual to be self-governing and not dependent on others for care, well-being, or livelihood. To be capable of independent living is seen as being able to manage one's own finances and to perform the necessary activities of daily living (ADL) without the necessity of continued reliance on others. Programs to help people achieve independent living provide for the social and medical services and also for the modification of homes that permit people access to all rooms and facilities.
