input—output analysis

A tool used by economists and planners to chart the linkages between organizations. In social welfare, the chart is constructed by listing all the social agencies in a column and then listing them in the same order in a row across the top. Numbers are written in the resulting columns to indicate the frequency with which any two agencies are linked according to some criteria. This method graphically reveals which organizations are isolated, which are sharing responsibilities and resources, and so on.
