The association of social workers (who belong through their respective national social work organizations) established to promote the social work profession, establish standards, provide a forum for exchanging ideas between social workers around the world, and present social workers' views to governments and nongovernment organizations (NGOs). IFSW developed the International Ethical Standards for Social Workers and cosponsors, with the International Council for Social Welfare (ICSW) and the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW), the journal International Social Work. IFSW provides consultation to the United Nations on issues of human development and human rights and also pairs social work organizations in economically developed and developing nations for an exchange of social work practice experience. IFSW originated in Paris in 1928 as the International Permanent Secretariat of Social Workers; the present organization was formed in 1956 and includes professionals from social work associations in more than 60 nations. IFSW is also known by its French name Federation Internationale des Assistants Sociaux.
