A term loosely applied to (1) international organizations using social work methods or personnel, (2) social work cooperation between countries, and (3) transfer between countries of methods or knowledge about social work. Virtually every country has a national department responsible for some phase of social services and personnel to carry out the functions of those departments. International social work organizations emphasize efforts to educate workers to ensure that social services needs are met. Organizations that have been active in international social work include the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Organization of American States (OAS), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Social Security Association (ISSA), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Many nongovernment organizations (NG0s) also have international social work aspects, including the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), and the International Union for Child Welfare (IUCW).
